God's love before we are lovable

There is an ancient temptation in our faith: to think that we must first become worthy before we are loved by God. We live as if divine love were a reward for good behavior, a response to merits that we have not yet built. But the apostle John undoes this logic with a simple and definitive phrase: we love because he loved us first. The initiative is not ours. It never was.
