Jonah 2
Below each verse in the original comes an approximate reading, in italics, for anyone who wants to pronounce the text aloud. It is not academic transliteration: it does not mark stress or settle the cases that depend on grammatical analysis, and the four-letter Name is read “Yahweh”, by the founder’s decision — the Hebrew pointing instructs saying “Adonai”, and Portuguese Bibles render it “SENHOR”.
The numbering differs in this chapter. The original has a different number of verses from the Portuguese — this happens in 134 of the 1,189 chapters, mostly in the Psalms, because the Hebrew superscription (“A psalm of David”) is counted as verse 1. That is why the two texts appear separately, each with its own numbering, instead of paired: pairing here would put a verse next to the wrong one.
5As águas me cercaram até a alma, o abismo me rodeou; as algas se enrolaram à minha cabeça.
A salvação [vem] do SENHOR.
